Suburban Van Life

Stealth Camping in a Van Full Time

What is Stealth Van Camping?

Stealth, or urban camping is pretty much just what it sounds, honestly. It involves camping in plain sight without drawing attention, so that others don’t realise you are staying there. Stealth camping is usually done in the city or the suburbs, around where other people are living. You might stealth camp while you’re travelling through a city and not wanting to pay to stay at a caravan park. Or, like me, you might be stealth camping full time in one place, while working or studying, rather than the more socially acceptable form of living in one place – in a house.

People go about stealth camping in various ways – they might be travelling by bike, or by van, by truck, by minivan or car. I live and stealth camp in my Transit van – a super common transport van in many countries including Australia, the US and the UK. The idea is to be able to live my day-to-day life, but more cheaply and freely. I talk more about my reasons for choosing to life this way in the post below.

Over the next few months, I’ll be posting more about van life and stealth camping:

  • what it is
  • why you might want to do it
  • how to do it full time while working a full time job – or part time
  • or while studying
  • how to keep safe
  • what to consider for your stealth van build
  • how “stealthy” is stealth camping, really
  • and lots more!
